Neutering Veterinary

Neutering for your pet
Neutering is the process of preventing animals from reproducing. This simple procedure is called castration in males and spaying in females. Both operations are carried out routinely under a general anaesthetic.

Important for dogs
- Neutering your male dog can significantly reduce the risk of prostate disease and testicular cancer. It can improve unwanted behaviours such as scent marking and mounting but any behavioural concerns in male dogs will be thoroughly discussed with the vet prior to neutering and the best course of action for your individual pet decided on in line with the most up to date behavioural guidance.
- Neutering your female dog reduces the risk of mammary cancers developing, and eliminates the risk of pyometra (an infection of the uterus requiring emergency surgery and costly treatment). Unneutered females will come into season a few times over the course of each year, which can be messy and attract unwanted attention from male dogs. zBreeding from your dog is a big responsibility, and can be very costly and time consuming. Please speak to our team if you are considering breeding and we can provide resources and more information to help support you and decide on the best option for your pet.
- We use evidence based practice to decide upon the best time to neuter your dog. Our friendly team will discuss your dogs breed, age, and temperament and advise you accordingly.

Owner with cat
Important for cats
We recommend neutering all cats from 6 months of age. This prevents problems such as urine marking, unwanted litters, roaming and fighting. Uncontrolled breeding increases the stray population and spreads infectious diseases such as FIV and FeLV. We accept Cats Protection Neutering vouchers to help with the cost for eligible clients.
